Education in Cambodia: Ongoing Progress and Achievements

Cambodia has made considerable strides in its education sector in recent years. This article highlights the key initiatives and accomplishments achieved.

Government Initiatives in Education

A significant part of Cambodia’s educational improvements can be attributed to the government’s concerted effort displayed through the following initiatives:

  • Increased Investment in Education: As of 2023, education is anticipated to comprise about 20% of the government’s budget, testament to the Cambodian authority’s increased funding dedication.
  • Improvement of Teacher Quality: To enhance the standard of education, several initiatives are being implemented, including both pre-service and in-service teacher training, and performance-based remuneration.
  • Efforts to Curb Dropout Rates: The government is striving to reduce dropout rates through financial support for students in need and expanded vocational and technical training.
  • Enhanced Access to Education: By constructing new schools and offering transportation assistance, the government is working to increase educational accessibility, especially for children in impoverished and rural areas.

International Support for Cambodian Education

Beyond government initiatives, many Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and international bodies contribute to advancing Cambodian education. Notably, UNICEF is extending early childhood education programs and working to enhance the quality of primary school teaching. Furthermore, the World Bank is backing the government’s endeavors to refine secondary education quality and diminish dropout rates.

Significant Achievements in Education

Due to these determined efforts, significant advancements have been made in the Cambodian education sector. The net enrolment rate for primary education has elevated from 82% in 1997 to over 97% in 2023. Simultaneously, the literacy rate for individuals aged 15 and over has risen from 53% in 2004 to 83.91% in 2023, as per World Bank data.
