Siem Reap, the heart of tourism in Cambodia, has numerous things to offer residents and tourists alike. Not only does it have culturally rich activities and architectural sites, businesses thrive here with more added every year. Following Phnom Penh for being a hot zone for economic activity, there are always real estate buildings that are being developed to make Siem Reap greater than it already is.

Siem Reap Provincial Hospital Building
A new provincial hospital in Siem Reap is being developed to make healthcare more easily accessible to residents, providing high-quality services. It’s a four story building that will have 220 beds for patients. This hospital will also have an emergency ward and can provide specialized surgical service.
This real estate project was funded using a $19 million aid granted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The hospital is expected to be completed and start providing service by late 2023. As of December 2021, the project already had its ground breaking ceremony led by the Director of Siem Reap’s Provincial Health Department, Dr. Kros Sarath, and Kamei Haruko, the Chief Representative of Cambodia’s JICA office.
38-Road Renovation Project
The 38-Road project seeks to connect major road systems with 38 roads of the 12 districts in Siem Reap to help lessen traffic and make it safer to travel. Besides making it easier and safer for vehicular travel, the project will also accommodate pedestrians by adding safety road signs, sidewalks, and more. Additionally, the sidewalks by the Siem Reap River will also be upgraded.
This project is led by the Ministry of Public Works and Transports (MPWT) that began on November 30 in 2020. It has a $140 million budget to connect the 38 roads and an additional $9 million is added to the budget to upgrade the sewage and rainwater systems.
As of December 2021, the project is already 92.72% completed and is expected to be finished by the end of this year.
Siem Reap – Battambang New Expressway
The Siem Reap to Battambang Expressway project was just approved to connect these two provinces and make it easier to travel quickly from both provinces. This project will connect 69 kilometers together of not only Siem Reap and Battambang but also Banteay Meanchey.
A research collaboration between the Ministry of Public Works and Transports and the China Road and Bridge Corporation indicated this project is necessary and can begin construction by 2025. However, according to Sun Chanthol, the Minister of MPWT, the project can begin construction by 2023 or 2024 depending on the budget that is yet to be determined.
NR6 Expansion from Skun to Siem Reap
A new plan to expand National Road 6 from the town of Skun to Siem Reap into four lanes was approved by the MPWT. While the project’s budget is yet to be determined, the project is expected to help make travel easier from Siem Reap to Skun and vice versa.
Currently, Minister of MPWT Sun Chanthol indicated that the project is still ongoing for further study. Additionally, once the project is launched, construction will be conducted in two phases with Skun to Kampong Thom section expanded from two to four lanes. The following phase will be from Kampong Thom to Siem Reap section expanded to four lanes.
NR6 Expansion from Sokha Hotel to Airport
The National Road 6 expansion project beginning from the Sokha Hotel to the airport junction will make it easier for travel and help reduce traffic in those areas. The lanes are expanded into six across the 5.8 kilometers connecting the hotel to the junction. This project was funded with the help of a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). As of June 2021, the project is already 50% complete.
New Siem Reap Airport
A new Siem Reap airport is currently being constructed in the Ta Yek commune by the Sotr Nikum district. This airport will make travel to and from Siem Reap easier since it is expected to accommodate 10 million travelers by 2030. Then by 2050, the airport will be able to accommodate 20 million passengers.
This project was approved by the government with the help of Yunnan Investment Holdings Ltd in October 2017. The new Siem Reap airport is expected to be completed by 2023. Additionally, according to the chairman of Angkor International Airport Investment (AIAI) in Cambodia, Lu Wei, it’s expected that the airport will be 67% completed by the end of 2021.
Angkor Aquarium and Animal Kingdom
The new wildlife park and aquarium called Angkor Aquarium and Animal Kingdom is a project designed to be one of the must-see attractions in Siem Reap. This project is led by the Angkor Wildlife and Aquarium with a budget of $18 million for its first phase and $52 million for its second and third construction phases. The project is expected to be open to the public by 2022.
